The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations present special
The FAO were able to join us at the conference via video link during the inauguration of the 7th Offshore Mariculture Conference.
Arni Mathiesen, Director General of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Department of the FAO spoke of the successes and failures of aquaculture projects throughout the world. His speech did not only touch upon the modern world but also developing nations which are relying on the help of FAO projects to provide a sustainable food supply.
Mr Mathiesen made reference to the state of food supply in current times, stating that “the world has embarked in its most ambitious plan to date: to eradicate hunger and poverty”. The FAO is committed to helping its member countries to meet their growing demand for food in a sustainable manner.
The FAO’s piece did not only highlight the fact that the growing demand for production through aquaculture is a world issue, but also that it is accessible on any scale. During the rest of this year’s programme we will hear from both large, commercial scale producers such as Open Blue and smaller studies highlighting recent research advances.
We very much look forward to welcoming the rest of our speakers during the coming days.
