Professor Patrick Sorgeloos has since 1991 been the director of the Laboratory of Aquaculture & Artemia Reference Center, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, State University of Ghent, Belgium. He defended his Ph.D. in Marine Biology in 1975 at the State University of Ghent, Belgium and in 1989 he was appointed professor of Aquaculture at the University of Ghent. In the years from 1991 to 2005 he was the director of the M.Sc. in Aquaculture programme (1991-2005) and since 2005 he has also been the coordinator of the European MSc in Aquaculture & Fisheries.

 

Professor Sorgeloos’ work include the coordination of the research of the Artemia Reference Center at the State University of Ghent (scientific, technical and administrative staff of 25 persons) and training of students at the MSc level (since 1991 over 150 graduates from 30 countries in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas) and the Ph.D. level (since 1985 over 40 graduates/students from 19 countries in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas).

 

From 1999 to 2000 Professor Sorgeloos was the President World Aquaculture Society; he has since 2004 served as chairman of the ASEM Aquaculture Platform; is the coordinator EU Thematic Network Aquaculture (since 2005) and is a member Advisory Group European Commission - DG Research FP7 theme 2 “food, agriculture and biotechnology (since 2006).
